Best Cincinnati Chimney: How Often Should You Clean Your Chimney? Keeping Your Home Safe and Cozy

Wednesday, 03 September 2025 by Chuck Caine

The allure of a crackling fire on a chilly evening is undeniable. But before you settle in for a cozy night, it’s crucial to ensure your chimney is clean and safe. At Best Cincinnati Chimney, we understand the importance of regular chimney maintenance. A common question we get is, “How often should you clean your chimney?” Let’s dive into the details.

Short Answer: The frequency of chimney cleaning largely depends on usage. As a rule of thumb, the National Fire Protection Association recommends an annual inspection and cleaning. However, frequent use or burning certain types of wood may necessitate more frequent cleanings.

Understanding Your Chimney

A chimney is more than just a structure; it’s a vital pathway for hot flue gases and smoke to escape your home. Neglecting regular chimney cleaning can lead to serious risks, including chimney fires, harmful emissions, and inefficient heating. Chimney cleaning involves removing soot, blockages, and creosote buildup, inspecting for damage, and ensuring safe operation.

Factors That Influence Chimney Cleaning Frequency

While annual cleaning is generally recommended, several factors can influence how often you need to clean your chimney:

•          Type of Fireplace:

o          Wood-burning stoves produce more smoke and creosote than gas fireplaces.

o          Gas fireplaces, while cleaner, still require regular inspection.

o          Coal and pellet stoves have their own unique cleaning requirements.

•          Usage:

o          The more you use your fireplace, the more often it needs cleaning.

o          Daily winter use necessitates more frequent cleaning than occasional use.

•          Wood Type:

o          Hardwoods like oak and ash burn cleaner than softwoods like pine.

o          Resinous woods like pine contribute to rapid creosote buildup.

o          Burning well-seasoned (dry) wood is crucial; green (wet) wood increases creosote.

Recommended Chimney Cleaning Frequencies

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standard 211 states, “Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances.” Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs should be done if the inspection calls for it.

In some cases, more frequent cleaning is necessary. If your fireplace is your primary heat source or you burn a lot of unseasoned wood, consider biannual cleaning.

Signs That Your Chimney Needs Cleaning – Expanded

Recognizing the signs of a dirty chimney is crucial for safety:

•          Visible Creosote Buildup: More than 1/8″ of black, oily residue indicates a need for cleaning.

•          Unpleasant Odors: A burnt wood smell when the fireplace isn’t in use suggests soot and creosote buildup.

•          Smoke Intrusion: Smoke entering your home indicates a blockage.

•          Poorly Burning Fire: Difficulty igniting or maintaining a fire suggests improper smoke draw.

Remember, even without these signs, annual maintenance is vital.

Professional vs. DIY Chimney Cleaning

Consider these points when deciding between professional and DIY cleaning:

•          DIY: Can save money but is risky without proper tools and safety measures.

•          Professional: Ensures thorough cleaning and safety, especially for structural issues or tall chimneys.

Conclusion

Regular chimney cleaning is essential for safety and efficiency. Develop a maintenance schedule based on your usage and wood type. When in doubt, contact Best Cincinnati Chimney for a professional inspection. We are happy to help keep your home warm and safe.

Chimney Repair & Replacement Process

Wednesday, 16 July 2025 by Chuck Caine

The process of repairing or replacing a chimney will vary depending on the extent of the damage and the type of chimney involved. The following are the general steps involved in repairing or replacing a chimney:

  1. Inspection: A chimney inspection is necessary to determine the extent of the damage.
  2. Obtaining necessary permits: Before any work can begin, it may be necessary to obtain permits.
  3. Demolition: If the chimney needs to be replaced, the old chimney will need to be demolished.
  4. Reconstruction: The new chimney will then need to be constructed, properly sealed, and weatherproofed.
  5. Installation of flue liner: If a new flue liner is required, we’ll walk you through your options.
  6. Masonry repair: If the chimney requires masonry repair, this will be done at this stage.
  7. Installation of chimney cap: A new chimney cap may need to be installed.
  8. Clean-up: Once the chimney repairs are complete, the area will be cleaned up.

Repair Cost

Chimney Repair & Restoration Cost

Many factors contribute to the cost of chimney rebuilds or restorations: chimney height, brick quantity, roof type, electrical lines, tree lines, and more. These factors affect how scaffolding must be built, and how much time and materials are needed for each project.

Best Cincinnati Chimney’s certified chimney technicians, project managers, and professional masons guide customers through chimney projects from start to finish. Our focus remains fixed on quality, integrity, craftsmanship, and safety.

Best Cincinnati Chimney: Why Cleaning Your Chimney is Vital

Monday, 16 June 2025 by Chuck Caine

When the cozy months roll around, there’s nothing quite like the warmth and ambiance of a crackling fire in your fireplace. But before you light that first log, have you considered the health and safety of your chimney? At Best Cincinnati Chimney, we understand the importance of a clean and well-maintained chimney. Regular chimney cleaning is vital for the safety and efficiency of your home, and here’s why:

1. Prevents Chimney Fires: The Silent Danger

One of the most critical reasons for regular chimney cleaning is to prevent chimney fires. Creosote, a byproduct of burning wood, builds up inside your chimney over time. This substance is highly flammable, and even a small spark can ignite it, leading to a dangerous and potentially devastating fire. By removing creosote buildup, you significantly reduce this risk, protecting your home and family.

2. Enhances Efficiency: Saving You Money

A clean chimney isn’t just about safety; it’s also about efficiency. A clogged chimney restricts airflow, making your fireplace less effective at heating your home. This means you’ll need to burn more wood or use more fuel to achieve the desired warmth, leading to higher energy bills. Regular cleaning ensures better airflow, allowing your fireplace to operate at peak performance and saving you money in the long run.

3. Reduces Health Risks: Breathe Easier

Burning wood releases harmful toxins and particles into the air. A dirty chimney can cause these substances to back up into your home, affecting your indoor air quality. This can lead to respiratory problems and other health issues, especially for those with allergies or asthma. Regular cleaning eliminates these harmful toxins, ensuring better air quality and a healthier living environment.

4. Prevents Wildlife Infestations: Keeping Critters Out

Chimneys provide a warm and sheltered place for birds, squirrels, and other animals to build nests. These nests can obstruct airflow, leading to smoke buildup and potential fire hazards. Regular cleaning and the installation of chimney caps can prevent wildlife infestations, keeping your chimney clear and safe.

5. Increases Lifespan: A Long-Term Investment

The buildup of creosote and other debris can corrode and damage your chimney over time. Regular cleaning helps to prevent this damage, prolonging the lifespan of your chimney and minimizing the need for costly repairs or replacements. Think of it as an investment in the longevity and integrity of your home.

Why Choose Best Cincinnati Chimney?

At Best Cincinnati Chimney, we are dedicated to providing top-notch chimney cleaning and maintenance services. Our experienced professionals understand the importance of a clean and safe chimney. We use the latest tools and techniques to ensure thorough cleaning, leaving your chimney in optimal condition.

In Conclusion

Regular chimney cleaning is an essential part of home maintenance. It not only enhances your chimney’s performance but also safeguards your family’s health and well-being. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Schedule your chimney cleaning with Best Cincinnati Chimney today and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with a clean and safe fireplace.

Remember, a clean chimney is a safe chimney!

The Buzz About Chimney Swifts: A Cincinnati Springtime Story (and Why Your Chimney Matters)

Saturday, 17 May 2025 by Chuck Caine

Spring in Cincinnati brings a symphony of sights and sounds, but one of the most remarkable aerial displays comes from the industrious chimney swift. These fascinating birds, often mistaken for swallows (though they’re more closely related to hummingbirds), are a vital part of our urban ecosystem, and their presence is a sure sign of warmer days ahead.

Meet the Chimney Swift: Urban Aviators Extraordinaire

Chimney swifts ( Chaetura pelagica) are small, sooty gray birds with slender bodies and long, pointed wings. They’re masters of flight, spending almost their entire lives on the wing, catching insects in mid-air. Their rapid, shallow wingbeats and constant chattering calls create a distinctive soundscape during the spring and summer months.

  • Unique Nesting Habits: Unlike most birds that build nests in trees or bushes, chimney swifts have adapted to urban environments by nesting almost exclusively in chimneys. They use their saliva to glue twig nests to the inside walls of chimneys, a behavior that earned them their name.
  • Insectivores Extraordinaire: Chimney swifts are voracious insect eaters, consuming vast quantities of mosquitoes, flies, and other flying insects. This makes them incredibly beneficial to our neighborhoods, helping to control pest populations.
  • Migration Marvels: These birds are neotropical migrants, spending their winters in the Amazon basin of South America and returning to North America in the spring to breed. Their long-distance journeys are a testament to their incredible endurance.
  • Conservation Concerns: Chimney swift populations have declined in recent decades due to habitat loss, primarily the capping of chimneys and the decline of older, unlined chimneys. The replacement of traditional masonry chimneys with metal flues also presents a problem as the swifts cannot adhere their nests to the smooth metal.

Why Your Chimney Matters to Chimney Swifts (and to You!)

If you have an uncapped, masonry chimney, you might be providing a crucial nesting site for these birds. However, it’s essential to ensure your chimney is safe and well-maintained.

  • Safety First: A clean and structurally sound chimney is crucial for both the swifts and your home. Creosote buildup and debris can create fire hazards, and damaged chimneys can pose structural risks.
  • Swift-Friendly Practices: If you discover chimney swifts nesting in your chimney, it’s best to leave them undisturbed until they have finished raising their young. Avoid cleaning your chimney during the nesting season (typically May to September).
  • Professional Chimney Care: Regular chimney inspections and cleanings are essential for maintaining a safe and efficient chimney. This is where a trusted local professional comes in.

Best Cincinnati Chimney: Your Partner in Chimney Swift Conservation and Home Safety

When it comes to chimney care in Cincinnati, you need a reliable and experienced team. Best Cincinnati Chimney understands the importance of maintaining your chimney’s integrity while also respecting the needs of local wildlife, including chimney swifts.

Don’t Let April Showers Bring Unpleasant Chimney Smells! (And Other Spring Chimney Tips)

Tuesday, 01 April 2025 by Chuck Caine

We all know the saying: “April showers bring May flowers.” But those same showers can also bring something far less delightful: unpleasant odors wafting from your neglected chimney. At Best Cincinnati Chimney, we know it’s tempting to forget about your fireplace after the last winter fire, but spring is the perfect time to give it some much-needed attention.

Why? Because those spring rains, combined with the warmth of the season, can create the perfect storm for chimney issues.

The Culprit: Moisture and Creosote

Here’s what happens:

  • Rain Infiltration: Spring showers can easily find their way into your chimney. This could be due to a missing or damaged rain cap, cracks in the masonry, or simple condensation within the flue.
  • Creosote Reaction: When this moisture meets the creosote buildup inside your chimney, it can create a strong, smoky odor. This odor can then be drawn into your home via downdrafts.
  • Liner Damage: Left unchecked, creosote and moisture can degrade your chimney liner, potentially leading to costly repairs down the road.

Why Spring Cleaning for Your Chimney Matters:

  • Odor Prevention: Avoid those unpleasant smells that can permeate your home during warmer, wetter months.
  • Prevent Costly Repairs: Addressing potential issues now can save you from expensive repairs later.
  • Protect Your Chimney Liner: Removing creosote buildup extends the life of your chimney liner.
  • Beat the Fall Rush: Scheduling your chimney sweep and inspection now means you’ll avoid the inevitable scheduling delays that occur during the busy autumn season.

Best Cincinnati Chimney: Your Spring Chimney Solution

Don’t wait until fall to think about your chimney. Take advantage of the calmer spring season and schedule your annual chimney sweep and evaluation with Best Cincinnati Chimney today. We’ll ensure your chimney is clean, safe, and odor-free, so you can enjoy the beautiful spring weather without any unpleasant surprises.

Fighting Creosote as You Go

Thursday, 27 February 2025 by Chuck Caine

At Best Cincinnati Chimney, we spend most days fighting creosote. We don’t want our customers to pay for repeated creosote treatments so I am writing this to help with tips that you can do at home. Creosote buildup in open fireplaces is a serious concern, posing both a fire hazard and a potential health risk. It’s a highly flammable, tar-like substance that forms when unburnt wood particles and volatile gases condense in the cooler parts of the chimney. While professional cleaning is essential,  there are several strategies homeowners can employ to minimize creosote formation between cleanings.

Here are some ideas on how to fight creosote in an open fireplace:

1. Burn Hot, Burn Bright: The Cornerstone of Creosote Prevention

  • Seasoned Wood is Key: This is arguably the most critical factor. Wet or unseasoned wood burns at a lower temperature, producing more smoke and incomplete combustion, which are primary drivers of creosote formation. Aim for wood with a moisture content of 20% or less. You can check this with a moisture meter. We have a source for good clean firewood if you need it.
  • Proper Airflow: Ensure your fire gets enough air. A smoldering fire, often indicated by excessive smoke, is a creosote factory. Open the damper fully when starting a fire and ensure your air intake isn’t blocked. Don’t overload the firebox; give the flames room to breathe.
  • Smaller, Hotter Fires: While it might seem counterintuitive, burning smaller, hotter fires can be more effective than a large, smoldering one. Smaller fires reach higher temperatures quickly, leading to more complete combustion and less smoke.

2. Smart Burning Habits:

  • Avoid “Overnight” Burning: While tempting for warmth, trying to make a fire last all night by reducing airflow and adding large logs often leads to smoldering and significant creosote buildup. It’s better to let the fire burn down naturally and restart it in the morning if needed.
  • Don’t Burn Trash or Treated Wood: Never burn anything other than seasoned, untreated wood in your fireplace. Burning household trash, plastics, or treated lumber releases harmful chemicals and contributes heavily to creosote formation.
  • Regular Ash Removal: A buildup of ash can restrict airflow to the bottom of your fire, leading to a less efficient and smokier burn. Remove ash regularly, but leave a small bed (about an inch) to help insulate the firebox and aid in starting new fires.

3. Tools and Products for Creosote Management:

  • Creosote Sweeping Logs/Powders: These products contain catalysts that react with creosote, making it more brittle and easier to remove. While they can help, they are not a substitute for professional cleaning. Use them as directed by the manufacturer, typically every few fires.
  • Chimney Brushes (for basic maintenance): For accessible areas of the smoke shelf or visible parts of the flue, a homeowner can use a stiff brush to dislodge loose soot. However, for the full length of the chimney, professional tools and expertise are required.
  • Monitoring Your Chimney: Periodically, and safely, look up into your chimney from the firebox with a bright flashlight. If you see a thick, tarry buildup (more than 1/8 inch), it’s a clear sign you need a professional cleaning immediately.

4. Professional Intervention is Non-Negotiable:

  • Annual Chimney Sweeping: Regardless of your best efforts, professional chimney sweeping by a certified chimney sweep is crucial. They have the specialized tools and expertise to thoroughly clean your chimney, remove all types of creosote, and inspect for any damage or obstructions. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends annual inspections and cleanings.
  • Addressing Chimney Issues: A professional can also identify and address any structural issues with your chimney (e.g., cracks, improper sizing, blockages) that could be contributing to creosote formation.

In Conclusion:

Fighting creosote in an open fireplace is an ongoing battle that requires a multi-pronged approach. By prioritizing seasoned wood, practicing smart burning habits, utilizing supplemental products, and most importantly, scheduling regular professional chimney cleanings, you can significantly reduce the risk of creosote buildup and ensure your fireplace remains a safe and enjoyable source of warmth. Never underestimate the dangers of creosote; proactive prevention is the best defense.

Repouring or repairing a chimney crown

Saturday, 08 February 2025 by Chuck Caine

Understanding the Importance of a Chimney Crown

A chimney crown is the concrete top of a chimney, essential for protecting your home from water damage. A damaged or missing crown can lead to water infiltration, which can cause significant damage to your chimney, roof, and interior walls. The problems with most crowns is they were poured with masonry meant for tuck pointing and noy cement that is meant for crowns.

When to Repair or Repour a Chimney Crown

  • Visible Cracks: These can allow water to seep into the chimney.
  • Missing Mortar: Exposed brick or concrete can deteriorate quickly.
  • Spalling: This is when chunks of material break off the crown.
  • Excessive Wear and Tear: If the crown is old and worn, it may need to be replaced.

DIY Repair vs. Professional Help

While minor repairs can be done by a skilled DIYer, major repairs or a complete repour are best left to professionals. Factors like the extent of damage, local building codes, and safety considerations should be taken into account.

Scope of Work for repair

  1. Clean the Crown: Remove loose debris and moss with a wire brush.
  2. Patch Small Cracks: Use a high-quality masonry repair mortar.
  3. Seal the Crown with Crown Coat: CrownCoat® Brushable Sealant is a fast setting elastomeric coating that forms a flexible waterproof membrane. CrownCoat is specifically formulated to repair and protect chimney crowns with cracks less than ½ inch from water intrusion.

Professional Crown Repouring

If the damage is significant, a complete re-pour is necessary. This involves:

  1. Removing the Old Crown: This can be a labor-intensive process, often requiring specialized tools and equipment.
  2. Preparing the Surface: The chimney top must be clean and free of debris. A form must be formed
  3. Pouring New Concrete: A high-quality, weather-resistant concrete mix is used to create a new crown. Include a drip edge on the crown to force water away from the chimney and down to the shingles. Always include an expansion joint around the top tile.
  1. Finishing and Curing: The new crown is shaped and allowed to cure properly.

Additional Tips:

  • Regular Inspections: Inspect your chimney crown annually for signs of damage.
  • Professional Cleaning: Schedule regular chimney cleaning to remove creosote buildup.
  • Consider a Chimney Cap: A chimney cap can further protect your chimney from water damage and debris. A multiflued cap that protects the entire crown will add ultimate protection to your crown and chimney.

By taking the necessary steps to repair or repour your chimney crown, you can protect your home and ensure the longevity of your chimney. If you’re unsure about any aspect of the process, call Best Cincinnati Chimney for a consultation.

Flashing: The Unsung Hero of Your Chimney

Tuesday, 28 January 2025 by Chuck Caine

A well-functioning chimney is essential for a safe and efficient home. While the chimney itself is a crucial component, the often-overlooked flashing plays a vital role in protecting your home from water damage.

What is Chimney Flashing? Chimney flashing is a specialized material, typically metal, that is installed around the base and sides of a chimney to prevent water from seeping into your home. It acts as a barrier, redirecting water away from vulnerable areas.

Why is Chimney Flashing Important?

  1. Water Damage Prevention:
    • Roof Leaks: A poorly installed or damaged flashing can lead to water seeping into your roof and attic, causing structural damage and mold growth.
    • Wall Damage: Water can also infiltrate your walls, leading to unsightly stains, weakened structural integrity, and potential health hazards.
  2. Energy Efficiency:
    • Heat Loss: Water damage can compromise the insulation around your chimney, leading to heat loss and increased energy bills.
  3. Safety:
    • Fire Hazards: Water damage can weaken the structural integrity of your chimney, increasing the risk of chimney fires.

Types of Chimney Flashing There are several types of flashing, each with its own specific purpose:

  • Step Flashing: This type of flashing is installed in layers, overlapping each other to create a watertight seal.
  • Counter Flashing: This flashing is installed over the step flashing to create an additional layer of protection.
  • Flash Seal: FlashSeal™ is a versatile and easy-to-use flashing repair system that, when dry, forms a flexible, waterproof membrane. It’s formulated for permanent adhesion to asphalt shingles, metal flashings, brick, and other chimney and roofing materials. Use FlashSeal to solve problem leaks around the base of chimneys, stacks, and vents. It is also great for sealing around skylights.

Regular Chimney Inspections Regular chimney inspections are crucial to identify any issues with your flashing or other components. A certified chimney sweep can assess the condition of your flashing and recommend necessary repairs or replacements.

By prioritizing chimney flashing and regular inspections, you can protect your home from water damage, maintain energy efficiency, and ensure the safety of your family. Call Best Cincinnati Chimney today to determine if you need a flashing repair. 513-474-1158
